Description and Overview
Networking goes beyond the vicinity of the technological world, and I learned that this summer. It is personal interactions, communication, and body language that make networking so powerful and important because those three factors provide details and information about a person and what they resemble. This summer, Mr. Volz and I attended several meetings with law professors, principals, teachers, Swarthmore professors, lawyers, judges, and attorneys and each of these meetings was a networking experience.
Skills Gained and Lessons Learned
I learned early on that these meetings called for more than just showing up and listening. Before each meeting, I would spend some time thinking about what I wanted to learn from this networking opportunity and created questions that would help me draw out the information I wanted to attain. During the meeting I would take notes and present body language that showed I was actively listening and engaging when when I wasn’t asking questions or talking. I learned that first impressions are important and are the key to networking. Essentially, networking is a game and you have to learn how to play by the rules.
Impact and Importance
Networking is essential because it is how one gets from point A to point B and so on. Not only does it do this but it enriches one's experience as you learn so much. Each meeting I attended, I learned about that individual’s experience with Youth Courts and her or his journey to where they are now. I learned socialization skills that I will carry with me forever as they have helped me grow and develop from a student to a working women.
